If you're interested in the wanko soba challenge, you have to come here. Staff are friendly too!

Wanko soba near Morioka station - fun, but not that tasty

Most soba has fish-stock in the soup, but they kindly offered me "vegan" wankosoba! Reservation is required, so you may need to speak Japanese but it's worth trying even if you are vegan.

Very good. Come hungry and get ready for a fast paced-nonstop noodle eating.

Wanko soba is famous dish of morioka. This shop is the most well known to experience it. Just opposite the station

How many soba noodles can you eat in one sitting? Why not find out the true limits of your stomach with this fun little experience in over eating. The rules, keep eating soba until you put a lid on your bowl. Be ready though because the staff is ready with tray after tray of soba ready to refill your bowl. Currently the record sits at 345 bowls of soba, bear in mind each bowl is just one bite of soba. I tapped out 149 bowls, and the average is about 50. You're served in traditional Japanese dining, with an apron to help with the soba juice you're bound to spill. The wait staff hovers near by dutifully refilling your bowl while shouting words of encouragement. If you make it past 100 bowls you get a small wood plaque denoting your achievement. Bring friends and family or make it an outing for the coworkers. Together my husband and I demolished just shy of 300 bowls. But a young Japanese man, on his first visit like us, knocked out over 160 bowls. Fear not they have a fixed menu as well you can choose from and have a nice relaxing dinner.

It's not cheap and super touristy. I'd say, if you're in a group it'll be fun, but if you're alone it's just kind of high-pressure "FILL YOUR BOWL UNTIL YOU COVER IT EAT EAT EAT" atmosphere with a staff member dedicated only to you, filling your bowl each time you empty it. You get souvenirs at the end stating how many bowls you ate. Unlike regular soba, here you don't finish with the extra broth. The good thing is that it comes with many different toppings, so you can top each bowl differently for variety. I'd also like to pay less if I didn't have to get the silly wooden plack charm saying how many bowls I ate.
