2011年 平成23年に神林岩船港から朝日まほろばまでが延伸開通したぐらいからパーキングエリアの建設が始まり
2012年 平成24年ごろに駐車場だけを設けて開設されたが当時は荒川パーキングエリアという名前すらも無く有るのは駐車場のみで自販機どころかトイレも無かった
しかしいつごろか思い出せないが簡易トイレが置かれるようになり2015年 平成27年ごろには自販機と水洗トイレが建てられて今のようになり簡易トイレは撤去された

However, I can't remember when, but a simple toilet was installed, and around 2015, a vending machine and a flush toilet were built, and the simple toilet was removed as it is now.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 豊栄SA (下り)から約40kmぶりの日東道最後の休憩施設。トイレと自販機しかないけれど、日東道は多くの場所が対面通行で低速車がいるとなかなか思うように進まずストレス溜まるので、手足を伸ばせる休憩場所があるのはありがたい。
The last rest facility on the Nitto Road, about 40km from Toyosaka SA (downhill). Although there are only toilets and vending machines, many places on the Nitto road are face-to-face and it is difficult to proceed as expected when there are low-speed cars, so stress builds up, so it is nice to have a resting place where you can stretch your limbs.
