Stumbled upon this amazing coffee shop as I was trying to find a place to wait out the rain. It wasn’t a difficult place to find either as you just look for the Japanese characters. Owner was kind and welcomed us in. The tea and coffee selection is specialized and unique from different parts of the world. The most interesting part is when he chooses the right cup for you from his vast collection. If you are in Kobe this is place I highly recommend!

Cafés these days seem to be aiming for a sleek, modern aesthetic so it was really cool to experience the vintage setting of Akaneya Coffee. As soon as soon as you step in, you feel transported into a different era. At first glance, Akaneya Coffee (located on the second floor of the building) resembles a saloon, with a wooden bar stretching the length of the small store. However, when you take a closer look, you see that it also has the feel of a refined apothecary. It was quite a stark contrast to your typical coffee shop. The environment was very different too. Instead of the normal bustle of young professionals rushing in and out for their caffeine fix, Akaneya Coffee seems to cater more to an older crowd, one that’s there to really savor their drink of choice. With classical music playing in the background and hushed voices, this café was both classy and peaceful. Aside from the ambience, this coffee shop also offers many different kinds of coffee/tea and the host tried his best to explain to us the origin and background of the coffee/tea we were choosing. It must have been difficult to do in English but we appreciated his attempt. While he was soft-spoken, we could sense his passion! From our seats at the bar, we watched him craft our drinks with dedication and precision. With each step done with intention, it felt like watching a performance. As neither of us are coffee/tea connoisseurs, we cannot say much more than the coffee and tea we ordered tasted good to us - the coffee not sour and the tea not bitter. Bar might be a bit low but we’ll leave the detailed reports to the experts ;) Overall, I’d recommend giving Akaneya Coffee a try. While I wouldn’t pull out a laptop to work here like I would in other coffee shops, it is a nice place to relax your mind.
