【案内板の文章】甲午震災記念碑明治27年（1894）10月22日午後5時35分庄内地方は大震災にみまわれた。夕飯の時刻でもあったので火災も発生し、未曾有の大惨事となった。酒田町の過半数に当たる1747棟の家屋が全焼し、160人を超える死者が出た。庄内全体で死者700人を超し、消失家屋も2,500棟を越したが、船場町、傳馬町、秋田町、袖浦村、広野村、新堀村など、最上川下流地帯の被害が特に難しかった。天皇皇后両陛下の御下賜金、全国からは多額の義援金がなど震災救恤があった。本間家は仮設病院建設の為に二百円を拠出した。旧庄内藩主酒井氏、風間氏、本間氏、松井氏、池田氏など鶴岡、酒田の豪商有力者による救援炊き出し、本町太平医師などの町医者による病人、怪我人の医療が行われた明治33年、白崎善吉、橋本熊五郎、木村茂三を建設惣代人とし、酒田浄福寺住職菊池秀言が碑文を作り。石碑を建てて賑恤の徳を有給に伝えるとともに、防災の心構えを忘れないよう、是に記した。
