It's a nightlight, but it doesn't seem to be used anymore, and it didn't light up at night.

This nightlight is located in the middle of the Tanhanakoji, which extends from north northwest to south. The houses are dense and unnoticeable, but it is a straight line from here to the coastline to the south. I went up the alley to the nightlight and the well on the right, and I grew up to 19 years old in 1975 at the dead end. But here in the past, I have never heard a story of being lit. However, this lantern seems to be a hint that alleys come down diagonally from the north side and stand at a corner that extends straight to the south. It is not clear whether this was relocated from another location or it has been here since Bunsei 6 (1823) on the reverse side, but there is one thing that can be considered about its structure and purpose of use. This Tanhanakoji was divided from inland north of Onomichi by Sanyo Railway (1891). Furthermore, since Route 2 was opened parallel to the railway (1951) in parallel with the railway, the relationship with the inland of the north side, especially Sera and the third order, was completely lost to people born after the war. However, when considering this lantern, words that connect the inland and coast, especially the islands of the Seto Inland Sea, are engraved on this lantern. I think something comes out when you think about it. The surface is engraved with the characters of the Golden Lord of the Kingdom. Does not mean the connection with the islands of the Seto Inland Sea? Tanhanakoji and the next Hashimotokoji are 300m in a straight line. The city hall is located at the southern end of the city. In other words, the public office. Once upon that side, there was a port on the small boat that sailed through the Seto. Therefore, this alley may not have been an important way to carry inland supplies to the port on the coast. From the control of traders and supplies and the collection of certain taxes, I am convinced that the government office can be built at the end point. I feel I can understand that it will be a city hall later. Then, the location of the nightlight was one of the marks for the cart dealer who carried the package from the inland. Railroads have been opened, and transportation of goods has been replaced by railroads, so it may not be necessary to light up with the modernization of the Meiji era.
