It turned out that skiing was a breakthrough for traveling in the snow at the time, and that Lerch was trusted by everyone.

After going down from the memorial for a while, a Basho Kumon is standing on a small hill in front of [Yakushido] (on the other side of the road). A flower pillow in the medicine column 欄 Bash Ok A monument built for 3rd year of culture (1806). [In the medicine column ...] is a phrase written in the journey of [Oku no Hosomichi] in Genroku 2 (1689), but is not adopted in the travelogue. The monument was originally in front of [Kanayayama Yakushido], but was moved to this place in the early Showa period.

12:45 It is an exhibit that seems to be the birthplace of Japanese skiing that Echigo Takada sends to the whole country. I would like everyone to take a look. You can see the history of skiing in Japan. Lerch There were many photographs of the exhibits that were valuable in memory of the virtues.

I was told that my grandfather learned skiing from Mr. Lerch in the Meiji era, but when I visited here for the first time, I was able to confirm that my grandfather's name was really recorded. Thank you very much to the staff of the memorial hall for kindly examining the materials ❣️

Birthplace of skiing in Japan ? In 1911, Mr. Lerch introduced skiing to Japan. It is said that Hakkoda's tragedy would not have happened if there was skiing skills ... It spread from military personnel to ordinary people, and materials that women were skiing in hakama were exhibited ? The way of sliding is what we now call telemark skiing, and we slide with Plouque & Stem, and balance with one stock instead of two. It wasn't leisure, it was just a technology to move in the snow ? It seems that the ski population is less than 1/3 of the peak, but I would like you to get excited somehow ?

This museum exhibited pictures of old-style skiing and Mr. Edler’s personal belongings. Noted on my wonder-tips site.

If there’s one individual synonymous with the Snow Country, it’s the Austro-Hungarian soldier, Major Von Lerch, or “レルヒさん” to the locals. He was sent to Japan to study the techniques and skills that the Japanese army had used to win the Russo-Japanese war and accidentally became a nationwide celebrity and eventually an icon that embodied Joetsu culture. On January 12th, 1911, Lerch began his ski training on Mt. Kanaya. The participants consisted of both soldiers and civilians, each equally impressed with the charming European and challenged by his particular skiing technique. Lerch taught using the “Stemboggen” method, which involved a single bamboo pole that served a duel purpose as a steering tool and as a brake. With Nagaoka Gaishi’s help, the Takada Ski Club eventually amassed over 6,000 members in 1912. To commemorate his contribution, the Japan Ski Origins Museum was erected on Mt. Kanaya in time to coincide with the 80th anniversary of skiing’s inception in Japan.
