We went there while camping for my sons birthday and we really loved the place. Even though it was raining we could still enjoy the walk. ❤️ you can even take your dog even though they are not allowed inside the shops and restaurants you can walk the streets with your pet. ? The soba with vegetables I had there was amazing and so was the mochi that they had. Kurikinton is also a favorite. ? I would love to go back again on a sunny day. ??

Interesting place to visit with beautiful and well-preserved houses built during Edo Period. Dainty shops that sells desserts, snacks, souvenirs etc. The vegetable bun and soft serves were delicious

One of the post towns along the historic Nakasendo trail connecting Tokyo and Kyoto via central Honshu. This is nowadays a popular hiking trail. The whole trail can takes 3 days to complete. A short 8km hike connect Tsumago-juku to another post town, Magome-juku. The towns: tsumago juku is more well preserved. Though both towns got lots of shops selling merchandise, most of the buildings in Magomejuku is rebuilt. So it feels less authentic. Hiking : Easy trail along a creek. Well paved road with mild slope. Got lots of public toilets in between and direaction well indicated. There is a tea house in the middle of the trail. The owner is a welcoming old gentleman who offers complimentary tea to hikers and may even sing folk songs to entertain the guests. After the tea house, another uphill path leading to traffic road. There is a store at the exit which sells shaved ice. Then, downward slope along traffic road. Look for sign after 200-300m, enter the trail cross the road. It's 300m away from Magomejuku. Tips : those not interested in hiking but want to visit the two towns can take public bus.

Beautiful! Love this place, it's charming and (at least when we went) not super crowded. Amazing effort to keep the town in traditional condition. Would love to come back during different seasons to see all its faces.

Both Magome and Tsumago were closed down to the pandemic. The path between was covered in snow in many parts but passable. The weather was very nice.

A quiet town located in the foot hills of Kiso. It is a nice walk of around two to three kilometers. Starting from the bridge to the wheel wheel on the other end. The town closes at around 4 pm. However, it is a beautiful view even in the night.

Beautifully located village. You normaly start your hiking tour (moderate level) in Magome. I recommend to take your lunch in Magome in one of the cute restaurants before you are heading towards Tsumago. There small boutiques and coffeeshops are perfekt for another break.
