Had really nice 2 dinners here. The soba salat, fried mushrooms, teriyaki chicken, the pancake just to mention a few were really great. The service is sincere, they speak a bit of English.

We were attracted to this place because of its cosy Japanese feel and lack of advertisement. Lots of locals come here and it was really hard to get seats, which left us very curious. They do not let people wait, they turned us away the night before we ate here because their seats were already full. It seemed like they prefer seating locals in contrast to tourists, as when we were seated the waitress/owner signalled they were full to some foreigners looking to dine in, but there were at least 6 seats available. The food was nice, but extremely unsatisfying for the price. We ordered the yam pancake, agadashi tofu and ginger pork, which we shared as a couple. The total for these 3 dishes was advertised as 2150 Yen, according to the menu. To put this in perspective, we could share one bowl of ramen and be more satisfied for fullness. We ordered drinks when we ordered our food - 1 chuhai and 1 shochu which cost an extra 900 yen. The owner/ waitress served us both what seemed to be a glass of water with a shot of vodka, and a very watered down cordial. Both drinks tasted very far from any prior versions we have tried in Japan, and we were expectedly disappointed. I was that unimpressed, that I asked the waitress if my drink was what I ordered, pointing to the shochu on their drinks menu which clearly showed a drink that did not look like what I was served. She just nodded saying yes, and walked away. We didn’t even drink these served drinks because they tasted that bad. We calculated our tasty but small meals and absolutely terrible drinks at 3050 Yen total according to the menu prices. She added on 10% tax when we went to pay... So we had to pay for meals and drinks a total of 3350 yen ($45 AUD). We then went from here straight to the street food section on one of the main streets in Nozawa onsen and ordered some cheap and delicious street streamed buns to satisfy our disappointing experience and belated appetites. I only give this place 2 stars because the food was tasty, but not special in comparison to any other food nozawa. Second to this, the waitress was very unwelcoming. Very abrupt and unhappy about her work, at least when it involves us as tourists. Not again, thanks!

Food was mediocre. Fried squid and prawns came with cold fries. Soba sauce was unexpectedly bland and unflavourful. The yam pancake was pretty good though (like yam rosti).

Generous portions, affordable pricing. The interior could use a slight renovation and smells a little because of the deep frier.

This is one of the most delicious food places in Nozawa. It’s completely nondescript but the food. Yummy! My husband, daughter and I have eaten here twice and both times have walked away satisfied and filled to the brim. The variety of dishes is just enough to make you happy and there’s something for even the fussiest of eaters - if you like traditional Japanese food. Fried shrimp, squid, agedashi tofu, okonomiyaki, chicken yakitori, miso soup, onigiri- just some of what we shared and ate. Each dish is carefully prepared and well worth the wait. They don’t take bookings and it can get so busy that people will queue up to eat here. It’s luck of the draw really and well worth it. It’s value for money and great for couples, romantic dates, and families. Thy have a variety of alcoholic drinks but do lack in the soft drink department. Kids are still happy. I’ve heard other people remarking as they’re eating how delicious the food is. When they’re leaving, how satisfied they are. Children especially. Thanks a big thumbs up! It’s cosy and not fancy at all. It’s down to earth mom and pop joint and it’s home away from home (especially if you’re used to eating great food at home). This place is a must. I highly recommend it.

Homey cozy place. Went twice on separate trips. Both times there was grandma serving and grandad in the kitchen. Limited menu. Nothing mind blowing but it's a place for some decently priced izakaya food in Nozawa.
