徒歩でも見過ごしてしまう人がいると思われるレベル。
しかしこのような地味な石碑が、
かつてここに新大橋が架かっていた事を知らせてくれている。

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 明暦の大火によって、避難路として両国橋が架けられ、それによって本所の開発が進み両国橋から30年後に架けられたのが新大橋なんですが、「新」が付いているのは両国橋の本来の名が「大橋」だったからです。その後に架けられた橋だから新が付いたそうです。両国橋は大橋という名が浸透する前に隅田川がそもそも国境であり、この橋の西側は武蔵国、東が下総国となっているため、江戸庶民が二つの国をつなぐ橋ということで両国橋と呼ぶようになり、その後、その名が正式名称になったものなんです。江戸時代に隅田川に架けられた橋は千住大橋に両国橋、新大橋、永代橋、そして最後が大川橋(今の駒形橋)だったそうです。新大橋にはこれと言って馴染みはないんですが、佐伯泰英さんの小説❬居眠り磐音❭の中で主人公の坂崎磐音が住んでいたのがこの橋の近くにある六間堀川のそばの長屋だったんですよね。そのせいか、行ったことがないくせに親近感があるんです。
The Ryogoku Bridge was built as an evacuation route due to the great fire of the Meiji era. Because its original name was “Ohashi”. The Ryogoku Bridge was originally bordered by the Sumida River before the name of Ohashi was infiltrated, and the west side of this bridge was Musashikuni, and the east was Shimokuni. After that, the name became the official name. It seems that the bridges that were built on the Sumida River in the Edo period were Senju Bridge, Ryogoku Bridge, Shin Ohashi Bridge, Eigayo Bridge, and finally Okawa Bridge (now Komagata Bridge). Shin Ohashi is not familiar with this, but the main character, Ayane Sakazaki, lived in Yasuhide Saeki's novel, Amanai Ayane, near the Rokumabori River near this bridge. It was a long house. Because of that, I have a sense of familiarity that I have never been to.
