★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 弘仁十二年(821年)弘法大師空海により開基されたと伝わる古刹の寺院です。その後久安二年(1146年)に中興の祖、浄賢が再興したが中世の寺歴は余り分かっていない。
近世には生駒一正の帰依暑く慶長六年に寺内林若干町の下賜された。
讃岐十五箇院、また江戸時代には六院家(宝蔵院、虚空蔵院、明王院、誕生院、地蔵院、威徳院)西讃五箇院に数えられ隆盛を見る。
威徳院は文化財の宝庫として知られています。県指定有形文化財の「木造兜跋毘沙門天立像」「木造阿弥陀如来立像」他、室町時代以前の仏教絵画や工芸品等貴重な文化財が多数所蔵されているのは、高瀬町内の複数の寺院がかっては威徳院の末寺であったと云う歴史が証していると考えられます。
また本堂前には三豊市指定の天然記念物の無量寿ハクが有ります。
現在も境内は大変広く愛本池を挟んで本坊と奥の院に分かれています。
It is an ancient temple that is said to have been opened by Kobo Daishi Kukai in the 12th year of Konin (821). After that, in the second year of Hisayasu (1146), the founder of the Middle Ages, Jyoken, revived, but the history of the temple in the Middle Ages is not well understood.
In the early modern period, Kazumasa Ikoma's devotion was hot, and in the 6th year of Keicho, he was given a gift from the town of Terauchi Hayashi.
Sanuki Jyugoin, and in the Edo period, it is counted as one of the Rokuin family (Hozoin, Kokuzoin, Meioin, Birthplace, Jizoin, Weitokuin) and sees its prosperity.
Weitokuin is known as a treasure trove of cultural properties. Many valuable cultural properties such as Buddhist paintings and crafts before the Muromachi period are held in several temples in Takase Town, including the prefecture-designated tangible cultural property "Wooden Helmet Bishamon Tenritsu Statue" and "Wooden Amida Nyorai Statue". It is believed that the history of the temple was once the last temple of the Weitokuin.
In front of the main hall, there is a natural monument designated by Mitoyo City, Mugenju Haku.
Even now, the precincts are very wide and are divided into Hombo and Okuin across Aimoto Pond.
