出羽への旅の途中、病でこの村に住み生涯を閉じたと伝えられるだけで確証はない。全国に点在しておりどれが本物なのかは判らない。
美人であることで小野小町と名乗る人が幾人もいたのでしょう。代名詞みたいなものですし。

During the trip to Dewa, it is only reported that he lived in this village due to illness and died, but there is no confirmation. It is scattered all over the country and I do not know which one is the real one.
There must have been many people who called themselves Ono no Komachi because they were beautiful women. It's like a pronoun.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 裏越後街道筋で確かに出羽に繋がりますし、小町の歌には里山の哀しい歌も幾種かありますが、何か別の女性の逸話が小町伝承と結びついたのでしょう。今もって手厚く弔る日本人の情けの深さは民俗の誇りだと思います
The Ura-Echigo Highway certainly leads to Dewa, and there are some sad songs of Satoyama in Komachi's songs, but some other woman's anecdote may have been linked to Komachi's folklore. I think that the depth of compassion of the Japanese people who still mourn is the pride of the folklore.
