汐見橋線は来なくなって久しいし、貨物ヤードは住宅地になるし。南海でも一番古い部類の駅なのに、どこか寂しくなる感じの駅。 ここから、住吉大社まで行けなくはない。 それを知ってか、結構、正月や夏祭りの時、住吉大社や住吉電停の混雑回避で此方に向かってくる人もいる。 そういう人で、混雑する駅でもある。

2020年2月26日、券売機のIC定期券発行システムが長期で停止中の時、普段は難波駅を利用するのですが、混雑を避けて、ここ住吉東駅の窓口で購入申し込みをしました。 対応してくれた係員さんがとても親切で丁寧で、気持ちよく購入できました。システム故障がなければ、知ることがなかったかも知れません。 私はこの路線の無人駅を利用していますが、何かあれば住吉東駅の人が対応してくれます。今回の事で、より好感を持ちました。

鉄道史上でも古い優等列車専用通過線が上下線にある駅。 対面式ホームで 準急との緩急接続が出来ていたら 利便性が向上したようですが、残念ながら路線の連続立体化工事の際、緩急接続が提案される迄は 対面式ホームは無理でしょう。 南海高野線利用で住吉大社へと参拝するのには 此の駅が便利ですが、阪堺電車上町線の神ノ木電停への乗換には 電車内放送や駅案内図は有りますが、時間が掛かり乗換に向いていません。 高野線の旧岸里駅が新岸里玉出駅へと替わり線路付け替えで分断される迄は、汐見橋駅行き普通電車が5番線で折り返し運転していたのは、今や昔で遺構だけが残る駅。

2面4線の駅で各駅停車のみ停車する駅。 その他はホームのない線路を通過します。 住吉大社の近くの駅でもあるが、お年を召した方には少し遠すぎるかも知れません。天下茶屋で南海線に乗り換えて住吉大社駅で降りることをお勧めします。 車内アナウンスや張り紙で上町線乗り換えと案内がなされていますが、最寄り駅である『神ノ木停留所』は結構急勾配の階段があるため却下。南海高野線の線路を跨ぐためなので致し方なし。 上下ホームは改札内で繋がっていません。 ちなみに難波方面のホームの御手洗の方が広く、AED設置型自動販売機があったり、若干優遇されています。
