One of the best things to do in Sakata! The performances were good, but short and the tea was delicious.

Traditional Japanese merchant house. One of a few places where you can see a Maiko performance. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the Sakata area

Artistic old Ryokan used in current form. Maiko dance performances from 2 pm were mesmerizing.

Somaro is an incredible place to visit. For those interested in architecture, you can experience and see closely all the details of what was a high-class restaurant. The paintings and dolls galleries are great to see. The staff is very nice and helpful and the most mesmerizing part of Somaro are the Maiko and their perfomances, ranging from different periods of Japan. After the perfomance, you can enjoy a cup of tea next to the garden and appreciate the sound and nature. Truly, Somaro is a must visit if you are in Sakata, a city full of surprises!

Somaro shows a small slice of Sakata’s deep history as one of Japan’s most important port cities. The Maiko culture originally developed through trade with Kyoto on the Kitamaebune ships, but it developed in its own unique way to bring you one of the best locations for a cultural experience in Japan.

A classic piece of Sakata history! The building itself is a work of art and the Maiko are as skilled as they are beautiful!
