★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 横浜･横須賀に近く、波の穏やかな「東京湾」沿いのこの地域は、飛行機の基地、生産地となった歴史もある。日本初の飛行艇専用の民間飛行場「根岸飛行場」、海軍航空発祥の地「追浜（おっぱま）飛行場」があり、飛行機のまちとして知られた。また、「太平洋戦争」中には「野島」に「野島掩体壕（えんたいごう）」が設けられた。戦前からの航空機メーカー「日本飛行機」は、現在も航空機の生産を続けています。
「日本飛行機株式会社」は、1934（昭和9）年に創立された国内の航空機メーカーで、「横浜海軍航空隊」と隣接し、「赤とんぼ」と呼ばれた「93式陸上中間練習機」などを中心に海軍・陸軍用の航空機と部品を生産していた。1949（昭和24）年に「日飛モータース株式会社」として再設立され、1956（昭和31）年に現在の「日本飛行機株式会社」に改名しました。
