Kasama and Mashiko are the historical pottery towns of eastern Japan, and have become a Japanese heritage site in recent years as "Kasamashiko". The house and studio of Shoji Hamada, a living national treasure that has made Mashiko ware artistic and well-known, has been open as a reference building since the 1970s. Shoji Hamada's works and collected pottery are lined up in the atmospheric Oya stone warehouse and the old folk house with thatched roof. There are also workshops and climbing kilns that made works. The garden where you can feel the four seasons is also beautiful. Although it suffered considerable damage from the Great East Japan Earthquake, it is still undergoing reconstruction. In recent years, Mashiko ware has become colorful and has various styles, but it is originally a muddy pottery with a simple feel. Shoji Hamada's work has a nice muddy smell and Mashiko ware. However, there are not many exhibits of the person himself. You may dig a little deeper (such as your chronology). I personally felt that it was a good facility to see a wide range of pottery.

If you are interested in pottery at all this is a pilgrimage you have to make. Shoji Hamada was a world renowned potter who influenced the Mingei folk art movement and later was declared a national treasure. Here you can see the studio, and kick wheel Hamada used as well as the actual kiln. While here we met one of the care takers who's father worked along-side Hamada who remembers them actually firing up the kiln! The entire town of Mashiko is a delight and not to missed.
