Not very large. Fresh seafood and sashimi, but not super cheap. Can make a lunch set. Also have a grilling counter near section 5 with minimal charge.

This market was fun to visit. About a 15 min walk from the train station, don't go to the large white building that says "shiogama fish market" but follow your gps. On the way you might see a tracktor caring large blue fin tunas in it's plow from the handling facility to the wholesale market. At the market, you can point to a clam or scallop and they will prepare it for you in the spot with wasabi, a bowing thank you, and followed by a smile of appreciation. You can pick random seafood items and build your own "chirashi" bowl with the items. The rice and soup was about 1000 yen. The only thing I thought these vendors could do to market twoards tourists would be to offer more variety plates rather than buying a pound of the same type cut tuna. We ended with the Toro and akami scrapings with some salmon roe. In the end we had a fun time and a great meal. There is a cook your fish on coal option as well. Furthermore, the place didn't smell at all, found that oddly pleasant.

A huge fish market where you can get wide variety of sea food, buy sashimi and also grill fish. We spent ~1100 yen each for a rice and miso set, some sashimi and grilled fish.

Awesome place. Roughly 15 to 20 minutes walk from the station. Upon reaching the market, you'll be overwhelmed by the number of ojisans and obaasans pointing at you and advertising their wares. Shop around for the cuts of tuna, ikura and other seafood that you like, then ask for gohan. You'll be directed to the restaurant where you can get a piping hot bowl of rice and miso soup. Mix your seafood into the rice to make the perfect bowl of Kaisendon. Perfect breakfast for a cold morning. Waaaaaay fresher than what Tsukiji market in Tokyo can offer. And cheap too, at about 1000yen (varies with the amount and type of seafood)

This seriously old-school market was built in 1965, and is a good place to go after the early morning tuna and fish auctions at the nearby Shiogama City Fish Market. Shiogama has the largest number of sushi restaurants per capita in Japan, so you know that the seafood here is the real deal. At the market stalls, freshly caught seafood is sliced up and readied to be sold to customers. While wholesale markets in Japan are usually only open to restaurant owners and businesses ,here they are open (and friendly) to regular visitors and curious travelers as well.
