They have cultural property. This is not a big temple but some wooden statues in the treasure hall are pretty interesting.

A little treble tucked away in the corner. Not large enough to warrant a detour but if you are staying in the area of is on the way to the geisha corner so worth a quick stop. Unless you are templed out like I was.

Went there during the Mando-e. Check it out if there are festivals going on!

Not a huge temple, but a less touristy one which was what I enjoyed about it. I got my first goshuincho and the book there as well. The staff were very helpful despite our language barriers. And even though they were closing, they were pretty patient in getting me my goshuincho!

This is one of the great esoteric temples of eastern kyoto. If you visit, be sure to check out the museum behind the main hall. It's treasures are truly mind-boggling. and especially nice aspect of this particular temple is that it functions as a place of ritual and ceremony, not just a tourist trap. Entrance to the museum costs money but you can enter the main religious hall for free. Even that is astounding. I particularly like the dragon artwork on the rafters

Nice petit Buddhism temple. One of the West Japan 33 oldest Buddhism temples. Very close to Kiyomizu temple, only 15-20!minutes by foot.

Last Friday February the 3rd, I went to Rokuharamitsu-ji (六波羅蜜寺) in Kyoto, to observe the annual setsubun ceremony. Although the temple grounds are quite small, I thought this is one of the most entertaining setsubun plays. It starts at 15.00 in the afternoon with mamemaki trowing. Followed by a Buddhist prayer service. After a bit a Oni (鬼 or demon) enters and trows a web across the praying Buddhist priest, he also trows them at the spectators. Finally the chief priest trows mamemaki at the demon to trow him out. Then comes the final mamemaki trowing, while shouting “Demons out! Luck in!" (鬼は外! 福は内 - Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!). Maiko, Samurai woman and prominent figures of Kyoto all joint in for the fun.
