遺跡跡。現地には特に何があるわけではないが、面白いものが発掘された遺跡として知られる。通常、有機物は土中の微生物に分解され、現在までに残ることがない。しかし、ここではその有機物(丸木舟、漆塗りの飾り弓、土器に付着した「おこげ」など)が出土した。現地のボーリング調査の結果、当地は縄文時代前～後期初頭まで低湿地帯であり、後の縄文晩期に土が覆い被さった事が分かった。この湿地層がいわば「タイムカプセル」の役割を果たし、これら遺物を良好な状態で保存したとのこと。有機物の出土は、全国的に見れば、珍しいものではないが、旧与野市の範囲に限って言えば、大発見と言える。なお、漆の樹液を採取したものと推定される掻き傷のある加工木が出土したが、年代測定の結果、これが日本最古の事例であることが判明した(下宅部遺跡の事例を500年遡るという。)。【参照】さいたま市遺跡調査会『さいたま市遺跡調査会報告書「南鴻沼遺跡」(第165、172、177集)』

As a result of a local boring survey, it was found that the area was a low-humid area from the early Jomon period to the beginning of the latter half of the Jomon period, and the soil was covered in the later Jomon period. This wetland layer played the role of a "time capsule," so to speak, and kept these relics in good condition. Excavation of organic matter is not unusual in Japan, but it can be said that it is a great discovery if it is limited to the area of the former Yono City. 南鴻沼遺跡は、さいたま市中央区大戸の老健施設の所にあったようです。遺跡の発掘作業をした際、漆を塗った木造舟が発見されたそうですが、残念ながら今は遺跡の痕跡もありません。
