大町市街の西の郊外、北原は、大町地区で最も古くから開けた集落のひとつです。大町の都市集落の発祥の地と言ってもいいでしょう。その集落の公民館・集会場と一体になっている不思議な建物が観音堂です。お堂の東に天正寺という大きな禅寺があるので、祀られている観音様は同じかもしれません。観音堂の周囲一帯は、家並みや道なりが古い時代からある歴史や伝統、文化を感じさせる楽しい雰囲気の街です。古民家が多いのです。その昔、北原は若一王子神社の境内までをも含む有力な村でした。というのも、ほかよりも標高が高いところで、古代から高瀬川が氾濫しても水面に浮いている安全な高台だったようです。そのため、古代から人びとが集落を結んで耕作地を開拓したところだったと言われています、
