昔、鶏が鳴き朝を告げる事を縁起のいいこととしていました。それは、無事に夜を超し朝を迎えられたという喜びなのでしょう。それに対して、夜が明けていないにもかかわらずに鶏が鳴くことを縁起が悪いとされていました。そんな迷信が信じられていたころに、この橋の欄干で金色の鶏が夜になくようになったというのです。人々は怪しみ近くに鎮座される八幡様に平和安全等を祈りに行ったそうです。その時は日が沈んだ夜、、、ところが、人々は八幡様に供えられた「黄金の鶏が絵が描かれた絵馬」から鶏が抜け出し橋のほうに飛んでいくのを目撃したというのです。時を経ずして、いつもの不吉な鶏の鳴き声が聞こえたのです。それで人々はこの絵馬に金網をとりつけて鶏が抜け出さないようにしたというのです。そう、不吉な鶏の鳴き声は止まったそうです。しかし、数日後に大洪水がこの付近を襲ったというのです。人々は、この洪水を知らせるために八幡様が鶏を遣わしたものと悟ったそうです。その経験を忘れないようにこの橋を鶏橋と呼ぶようにしたそうです。この話を知ってかどうか解りませんが、橋の欄干には鶏が描かれています。今は道路が舗装されて平らになり、橋と気づかずにとおる人も多いようです。
