「日本化薬」＝「日本火薬」であって、かつては「陸軍岩鼻火薬製造所」として、火薬やダイナマイトを製造していた（隣の「群馬の森」にある歴史博物館の展示によれば、爆発事故も再三起きた模様）。終戦までは「岩鼻軽便鉄道」が、それらを輸送する路線として、倉賀野駅からこの工場のすぐ脇の「上州岩鼻駅」まで敷設されていた。いまも注意深く探すと、鉄道遺構があるようだが、当方は見ていない。
現在は、機能性化学品などを中核とするメーカーだが、火薬メーカーの名残というべきか、自動車のエアバッグを一瞬で爆発的にふくらませる装置も製造している。
