奈良県宇陀市室生にある真言宗室生寺派の大本山の寺院になります。
室生寺は、第40代・天武天皇（？ - 朱鳥元［686］年）の勅願により、修験道の祖である役行者（えんのぎょうじゃ／本名：役小角［えんのおづぬ］／7世紀後半の山岳修行者で修験道の開祖とされている人物）がこの地に初めて寺を建立したと伝えられています。
奈良時代末に至り、後に第50代・桓武（かんむ）天皇（天平9［737］年 - 延暦25［806］年）となられた山部親王の延寿祈祷をきっかけに、興福寺の高僧・賢璟（けんけい／和銅7年［714］年 - 延暦12［793］年）が勅命を受け、平安遷都まもなく弟子の修圓（しゅうえん／宝亀2［771］年 - 承和2［835］年）が堂塔伽藍を建立しました。後に空海の弟子で修圓とも親交の深い真泰（しんたい）が真言密教を携えて入山し、灌頂堂や御影堂等が整えられました。
真言密教の根本道場である高野山が厳しく女人を禁制したのに対し、室生寺は女人にも開かれた道場「女人高野」として広く親しまれるようになりました。

Murouji Temple is the ancestor of Shugendo (En no Gyoja / real name: En no Gyōja] at the request of the 40th Emperor Tenmu (? It is said that a mountain practitioner in the latter half of the 7th century (who is said to be the founder of Shugendo) built the temple for the first time in this area.
At the end of the Nara period, the 50th Emperor Kanmu (Tenpyo 9 [737] -Enryaku 25 [806]) was the trigger for the Enryaku prayer of King Yamabe. High priest Kenkei (Kenkei / Wado 7th year [714] year-Enryaku 12 [793] year) received a decree, and soon after the relocation of Heian-kyo, his disciple's training (Shuen / Houki 2 [771] year-Jowa 2 [835]) built the temple temple. Later, Shintai, a disciple of Kukai and a close friend of Shuen, entered the mountain with Shingon Esoteric Buddhism, and the Abhisheka Hall and Mikage Hall were set up.
While Koyasan, the main dojo of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism, strictly prohibited women, Murouji became widely known as the dojo "Women's Takano", which was open to women.
