「御祭神は雨師大神すなわち水神様で、
崇神天皇の時代、淳名城入姫(ぬきないりひめ)をして
穂積長柄岬に創祀される。古来十年に一度の大祭には
和歌山、吉野、宇陀その他近在の村々から千人余りも
参拝者の列が続いたとある。先頭に丹生川上神社、
中下社が金御幣を持ち、後尾は末社の狭井神社が務めた。」

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 全国の水神の総本山。古来10年に一度の大祭には1000人以上の参拝者が集まったという。崇神天皇の時代（約2000年前）の創建だが、おそらくそれ以前からの原始的な信仰が王権によってまとめられたのだと思う。大和神社の摂社であり丹生川上社の元宮であることから、大和神社の力の大きさが伺える。水だけでなく天候全般を支配している偉大な神だ。
