猿沢池に住んでいた善女龍王が、采女が入水して穢れたのを嫌い、室生龍穴に移るまでの間、この池に住んだとの言い伝えがある。
2018年、春日大社創祀1250年を記念して、140年ぶりに里宮が再興された。(水谷神社の近く)
