Knowledgeable volunteers will explain the history and mechanisms behind all the toys and it's completely free. Well worth checking out of you're in the area and have an hour or two free

They have many old toys on display that you can actually touch and play with. The staff were very patient and explained to us (mostly in gestures) how everything works. Overall, I ended up enjoying this way more than I thought I would! Definitely worth an hour of your day in Nara.

Well worth a visit, especially with kids who may not even realize that toys without batteries ever existed. The level of cleverness in these toys is incredible.

The staff are very accommodating to English speakers and will sit with you and show you how to play with the toys, puzzles, and board games. They said they have around 200 toys they rotate through so make sure to come back every time you visit Nara! The admission is free but they do accept donations so please support this awesome museum! We would have stayed for hours, but wanted to be respectful of others' experience. It turned out our visit here was a great investment to our trip overall and was informative to other museum visits later. Great place for adults and kids alike.

The toys come with descriptions (although some are only in Japanese). They're displayed on tables over a tatami room (take off your shoes before you enter!) Overall, one of my favorite parts of Nara.
