★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 白石城三ノ丸の掘跡です。城の防御と町の防火を兼ねて堀跡です。江戸期はもっと広く本当に堀だったようですが明治以降の町つくりの際堀を埋めたりして多くの堀は縮小されていまのような形になったようです。水は外堀替わりの沢端川から引いており町を通り斎川へ流れていきます。白石城は城主が変わったおかげで伊達氏に対する備えのために北に防御を厚くしたり、伊達領になってからは別の場所の防御を固くするなど戦国期を通じて防御を固めた城になってます。
