★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Busy place but still managed top service. Staff helpfully and skilfully cooked the monja and okonomiyaki which was greatly appreciated. The classic mentaiko monja with mochi went down well. The okonomiyaki was cooked to extra thickness much like a pancake. Apparently it’s a thing they specialise in. Clean, reasonably priced, and with an English menu, definitely a place to check out in that part of Ueno.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Went in as we stumbled across it by chance while walking along the Ameya Yokocho. They actually specialize in Monja which is cooked on a teppanyaki hot plate right in front of you. The hot plate functions as table and dish at the same time and the staff was literally cooking in between me and my wife.
Remember I said they specialized in Monja?
I ordered an Okonomiyaki dish instead which ended up being just nice as we had also ordered scallops and squid to be grilled for us !!
All in all, I liked the place and will definitely come back the next time for the Monja dishes.
Do note that the restaurant is built under the train tracks and you will hear/feel the trains passing regularly. Not enough to be a pain but some people might be more sensitive to such things.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Bad experience all around. My family happened upon this place and we were the first people in line. We were not given an estimate wait time, even after asking multiple times, and ended up sitting outside for 50 min before we were finally seated. Then, we were very unhappy that we were forced to order a dish per person (so 3 instead of the 2 dishes we wanted to order) - what was even more frustrating was that the table of 2 next to us had clearly only ordered 1 dish, making me think we had been scammed. When the first dish had been served, we didn’t recognize it as something we ordered, but noticed every table had received it so we thought it was a complimentary appetizer - didn’t really taste like anything though. Actual food was ok... but we were again frustrated when it seemed like our waitresses forgot about us and tended to everyone else while we were waiting for a long time in between dishes. Final straw was when we looked at the check and saw an extra ~1200 yen charged to us - when we asked about it, found out there was a ridiculously high seating fee per person. Horrible experience, completely ruined the night for us, would not ever go back.
