現在の美歎は古代は稲葉山の山頂付近の(奥三谷)から(宮の前)に移り住んだ人々が現在地に集落を作りました。山頂付近の生活は人口の増加で不便になり今の場所に落ち着きました。「美歎神社」は三神を奉る「式内社」です。二神は天照大神由来の武勇の二神と美歎の(空ケ滝)に鎮座の水の神(市杵島姫命・いちきしまひめ)の三神を合祀しています。鳥居から少し見上げた位置に拝殿本殿の端正なシルエットが見えています。集落の中央付近を流れる美歎川の橋の袂に大きな常夜燈が建っています。そこを高岡方向の山並みに沿って行くと直ぐに「美歎神社」が鎮座です。谷と谷とが狭まっているせいで日が落ちていくのが少し早いように感じます。近くではトラクターのエンジン音がずっと響いていました。
