中世以降は廃絶した諏訪信仰の神事で、「建御名方神/たけみなかたのかみ」子孫の諏方氏が世襲した神職で「諏訪大明神」依代(よりしろ)の現人神の地位について上社の頂点に立ち君臨したという「大祝(おおほうり)」や「洩矢神/もりやのかみ」の子孫の守矢氏が明治時代まで世襲した「神長官(じんちょうかん)」ほかの神官が、「ミシヤグジ神(諏訪地方に根付いていた縄文時代からの信仰における精霊といわれる)」とともに、旧暦12月22日に「御室(みむろ)」入りして、翌年3月中旬寅日の「御室」撤去(祭祀の都度に祭場の「室」を造り 終わると取壊して原状回復することが本来の形だといわれる)まで半地下式土室に籠る「穴巣始(あなすはじめ/中世以降廃絶したため詳細は不明だという)」という祭祀がおこなわれた遺跡地と伝えられる。

御室とは、浅く掘られた穴に設えた参籠所のことです。毎年、冬至に掘られて、春分の前に埋め戻されました。中世までは、諏訪大社の神官団は参籠日ごとにこの御室に籠って、巣穴での蛇の冬眠を真似た祈祷の行事をおこないました。蛇の冬眠を真似ているので「穴巣始め」と呼ばれたそうです。冬至から日足が伸びるので、春に向かって1年の農耕が始まる印だったものと考えられます。 蛇は古来、肥沃と豊穣の象徴だったので、春の耕作が始まる前に豊作を祈願したものでしょう。そして、言い伝えでは大蛇の形をした神体はミシャグジ(ミサグチ/オシシャグジ)様と呼ばれていました。諏訪地方に多く見られる「ミシャグジ」信仰は、諏訪大神タケミナカタの登壇以前の古い諏訪信仰(モリヤ神信仰)のひとつと考えられます。あるいは、モリヤ神よりもさらに古くからの自然信仰かもしれません。 中世末には、この祭事の伝統は失われたようです。とはいえ、御室と穴巣始めを崇敬・記念して、ここに御室社を建立しました。

Or it may be a nature worship that is even older than the god Moriya. At the end of the Middle Ages, the tradition of this festival seems to have been lost. However, in commemoration of the beginning of Omuro and the burrow, Omurosha was built here.
