本殿は元禄16年建造、旧小川町では最古の建造物で、猿田彦命を主神として祀る神社です。境内に建てられた碑を見てみると、この地域を治めていた武将の戦馬が合戦のおりに死ぬと、憐れんだ村人達が合祀したと記されております。今はもう、伐られてしまったんですが、以前は大きな銀杏の木が生えていて、秋には地区の方が掃除のついでに拾ってらっしゃいました。古社ですが、マメに手入れがなされているようです。

御祭神は猿田彦命。天正（1573-1593）の末頃、佐竹氏・江戸氏両軍が府中の大掾氏を攻め、江戸氏の別働隊が田余砦（取手山館か？）を攻撃するため当地に差し掛かった際、軍馬に給餌した。やがて出発しようとした時、一頭の馬が藪に入ってもがき苦しみ死んだ。里人達はこれを哀れんで、高台に運んで丁寧に葬り、のち一祠を建て、陸奥国駒ヶ岳鎮座の御祭神を勧請して馬霊を合祀したのが当社のはじまりである。明治5年村社列格。境内の案内版「小川町指定有形文化財　駒形神社本殿」にあるように、御本殿は旧・小川町に現存する建物で最も古い元禄16（1703）年再建ということで、どきどきしながら拝見したのですが・・・うーん、結構新しいような気が。元禄16年というよりも平成16年に近いよーな。どちらかと言うと拝殿の方がもう少し古く見えます。案内版の最後に「その後しばしば改修を加えて今日に至っている」とありますので、最初のパーツ（部材）はとっくの大昔に替えられてしまっているということなのでありましょう。
