★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I studied from Levels 1-6 here. This school is mainly for westerners and/or people who can't read kanji yet.
Levels 1-3 : are absolutely amazing. They are by far a 5 star rating (I had great teachers for levels 1-2. However, for level 3 I had an awful teacher.
Levels 4-6 : are alright. Be prepared for some boredom. They're worth going to but not as good as the earlier levels. When you get to these levels you feel like you're missing somethings and/or not studying the right things.
Levels 7-8 : I've personally never attended these classes but from my friends who have ( well over 12 of them) all say the same thing. It's just not worth the money. The majority of the class is stuff that you can (and should) do on your own.
All in all it really depends on who your teacher is. But if you're a westerner like me, I'd recommend this school to you.
Other schools that have a higher percentage of Chinese people assume that you already know the Kanji and their meanings. ( from a friend who transferred to Kai )

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Location is quite terrible due to a crowded area (shin-okubo seems to be packed 24/7) but it's central tokyo so not gonna complain here.
Great teachers except for one older lady who barely knew english and had the worst teaching method and extremely quiet voice. Other than her, really loved all the teachers.
Classes are very interactive, my classmates and I joked with the sensei basically the entire class. Summer session focuses on practical japanese phrases, words and usage so it's very useful in and outside of school. Class was quite diverse so it was fascinating to learn about other cultures as well.
Class size turned out to be quite perfect at around 10 or so for the summer sessions.
Really enjoyed my time there and good classmates make a huge difference along with awesome teachers.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Not sure I should submit this review because I went there such a long time ago. However, I was pretty favorably impressed at the time, and what impresses me now is simply that the school is still around after all these years. I took a sort of summer intensive course that was a kind of mix of audio-lingual techniques with direct method. I did read a number of the reviews and mostly agreed with them, except that I didn't see much teaching staff turnover during that period (but it was a short intensive course, after all). As regards the comments about the quality of the teachers... Well, duh. However there are a bunch of things that affect getting and retaining good teachers, and even at a good school you may get a lemon. (However my main experience in that category was over near Yotsuya Station.)

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I went to KAI for several levels and I would not recommend the school.
The school has teachers constantly leaving and joining. Your experience at the school will depend a lot on if your teacher is good or not and since they constantly get new teachers you are never guaranteed a good education.
The curriculum starts out great in the beginner levels, as you advance to higher levels it gets progressively worse. You will not get any help if you struggle, the school will simply tell you that its your own fault and you should simply do better. This is even worse if you have a bad teacher, as they will simply tell you to "do your best" with a smile without actually attempting to help you.
A lot of people recommend this school because many westerners go here which makes it easy to make friends, and many are just happy to get a chance to live in japan even if they fail repeatedly through no fault of their own. The school dont care as long as you pay them.
In short, I recommend the first two beginner levels as they teach you the basics in a very good way. If you simply want to experience japan this school is probably good for you. If you want a serious education where you actually learn japanese properly, look for another school.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I went to Kai for the summer teen program this year and it was the best experience I’ve ever had.
The teachers are amazing and very encouraging which helped me a lot. They have a great way of teaching. Also being in Japan and doing activities helped me learn a lot of language as well.
The activities they provided for the 3 weeks were absolutely amazing, there wasn’t a day that went by where I didn’t have fun and I learnt new things about Japan everyday.
It also allowed me to meet so many amazing people from all over the world and we all got along so well together. Kai is like one big family!
Thank you Kai for an amazing experience!
I would definitely recommend this school!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I had fun doing their beginner classes back in 2005. I worked my way up to medium conversation level. Mostly good teachers and fun lessons at Kai Nihongo Gakko.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I am one of the students whose trip to Japan was delayed due to the Pandemic. In the meantime, I have received so much assistance from the School regardless of questions asked, or problems that come up. The staff is so kind and helpful, They respond in a timely manner and are very professional. I feel very grateful to have the opportunity to learn Japanese at Kai Japanese Language School. I have finished the Level 1 course online, and I am currently a student in the Level 2 course. Not only have I learned a lot but I've come to really enjoy working with my teachers as well as the students and the staff at this school. I can't wait to meet everyone and thank them for their help and kindness when I am in Japan!
