Astonishing. The dishes are either simply and perfectly designed and executed or more playful and challenge ideas about texture and flavor. The dish with cutlass and lotus root was the most amazing dish I've ever had. The flavor drawn forth from simple root and fish were totally unexpected.

Sadly unsatisfactory for a Three Star Michelin-rated restaurant in a country where food is elevated to an art form. The portions were exquisitely sized and presented but the food quality was mediocre at best. Superb monkfish liver was followed by tough, stringy sea bream sashimi, sinewy lobster that was chewy and tasteless, gelatinous steamed black snapper in an undistinguished broth, and almost inedible beef soup: the meat was gristled and slightly rancid. We had a 21:00 reservation for the counter but weren’t seated until after 22:00 in a small windowless room, the only benefit of which was we were free to discuss our disappointment. Service was excellent but could not make up for the poor quality of the food.

Wasn't as wowed as I had hoped to be. Don't get me wrong, the ingredients were great, food was generally very good and service was friendly. But I felt that the service was a bit too hurried for my liking.

3 Michelin starred nihonryori restaurant. Quite good food and service but I think they need to improve some details. (For example, I got crabshell in my crab meat dish)

This is the best example of the kind of restaurant that the food does not look very special on the surface, but once you taste it you are immediately impressed the large amount of effort and technique being put into preparation. If you can't get a booking, it's sister restaurant "Ren" is definitely worth a try.

Kagurazaka Ishikawa is the restaurant we place first priority when visiting Tokyo, even having dined there nine times. Though their dishes look simple; be it grilled, steamed, fried and simmered, they could coax out the subtle essence/taste of the seasonal produce and meat. Even the rice served at the end of the course is exceptional. They adhere closely to the tradition of washoku, besides tastiness, presentation and plating is of great importance. Dishes are served on tableware like mino-yaki or lacquerware , and drinks with fine vintage Baccarat crystal glassware. Be it seated at the sought-after counter (table is from centuries old hinoki) or private room, service is consistently good and Chef Hideki Ishikawa ensures to meet and thank the guests. His restaurant also has good selection of sakes, and quite often have the Juyondai. Only issue is, need to plan early to get reservation.

There was that rice. Yeah, that exceptional rice I had there. And indeed, rice is always great in Japan. Got to give that to them. And yet, that rice, I insist, that one was ...something else..! Then, the amazing service, superb cooking. A dining destination, no doubt about that. Kagurazaka Ishikawa, you are already known as one of this world's leading dining destinations and the fact is that you deserve that enviable reputation!
