★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Had an amazing time here! It's probably now a lot more popular and crowded since the feature on Netflix, so do take note of the opening hours if you want to avoid waiting in line for too long!
Very reasonably priced sushi and sashimi. Don't forget to try the unagi too. To be very honest, the torched tuna cheeks are decent but the wait is a tad too long as everyone orders it and he only cooks it in batches. Still really fun to watch him do it though!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Went there at 2.45pm (opens at 2.30pm on weekends) and was shocked to find a long queue infront of us, I guess the hype generated by Netflix is very real and should not be estimated. We stuck around for around an hour and a half to reach our turn and I must say the wait is well worth it! We had the "star" dishes tuna cheeks, sashimi platter and also some of the lesser known ones such as boiled crab and unagi, and we were pleasantly surprised at the freshness and quality. Special shoutout to the boiled crab, we were not expected it to taste as good as it did, it has a sweetness that is difficult to describe, please order it to find out youself. Of course, the goofy antics of Toyo add another dimension to the dining experience, be nice to Toyo and he might offer an photo opportunity with him!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The lean tuna rolls were amazing and worth the wait. It was a fun experience and I enjoyed all the food. Some people around us were disappointed that the tuna cheek was sold out by the time they got there but the other food on the menu is also amazing and worth trying. Toyo has a gift for picking quality ingredients and making great simple food. Wishing Toyo a well deserved break while he is closed overed the new year holiday period.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It's no wonder Izakaya Toyo became famous! With such a fun loving attitude, a friendly staff, very tasty food, and entertainment to boot, this is a one of a kind place. As many others, I found out about Toyo from the Netflix documentary, "Street Food," but was lucky enough to be at a table with people who had been coming to Toyo for years. Him and his food were famous long before he was on any documentary. The blow torching of the Tuna truly is a wondrous spectacle to witness! And not only that, but the flavor is incredible. It gives the exterior this slight crispness while leaving the inside juicy and moist. An ingenious solution to cooking the food faster while amazingly making it actually taste better too. Healthy portion sizes, fun atmosphere, and good beer. What more could you ask for.
Definitely come early, before even it says they are open, as the line builds up quick and you could be waiting for over an hour. Even having said that, I'll be back again!
ありがとう、とよさん!美味しかった!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Honestly came here because of the Netflix hype. In short, not worth it. I really tried to like the place because of the owners story but no unfortunately the food was quite below average. I guess people come here for the vibes rather than the actual food?
Came here at around 3:30 on a Saturday and was first in line, the wait was about 20 minutes.
I ordered the $3,200yen set, which comes with an appetizer of crab and scallops marinated in vinegar, and a plate of sashimi (uni, ikura, and fatty tuna). I also ordered crab claws ($900 yen) and half eel ($450yen) a la carte.
Appetizers came fast, but the plate of sashimi took about 30 minutes to come. Honestly was not worth it in terms of the wait, the price, and quality of the food being served) because the “fatty tuna” that I got was very subpar, even worse than what I can usually get in New York or Hong Kong. It had an insane amount of veins in it, I don’t think I’ve ever had fatty tuna with that many veins in it so this is definitely a first. It was massively disappointing since it was a really long wait, and the food was not even good/special by any means.
The bill came out to be around $5600yen, I could have gotten a really nice tempura omakase lunch set with that. I wish I did the latter instead. Go at your own risk.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Not only was the ambiance unique and welcoming but the food was outstanding and very affordable. The owner came out to personally greet us and struck up a brief conversation about his travels to America. The tuna cheek was amazing, as was the eel. We absolutely adored this place and cannot wait to come back.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ If love is the secret ingredient of any chef's hands, Toyo-san's touch is unicorn magic. This is a standing & shared (mostly) table dining experience where you'll say Sugoiii, Taebakkk, Hebattt & Whoaaa in one breath! Enjoy a mishmash showcase of crab claw, uni, unagi & the signature broiled tuna cheeks with beers - punctuated with Toyo-san's hilarious showmanship poses, cheeky grins & enigmatic bellows :) Please arrive at the Izakaya's "gate" at least 45 mins before opening hour to get front row seats/spots & ask for a photo op together during intermission (he might be inclined for a hug when he isn't playing with fire!).
