＜「史跡 一 首 坂
源義家と安倍貞任の連歌のこと。陸奥守源頼家朝臣が貞任宗任を攻めたとき、中略、貞任は堪えられなくなり遂に城から出て逃げ落ちるところを頼家の長男八幡太郎義家が追いついて「ひとこと言いたいから少し待て」と声をかけた。貞任がふり向いたところへ
『衣のたてはほころびにけり』と下の句を詠み、上の句を待った。貞任は馬をとどめて義家に向い、間髪を入れずに
『年を経し糸の乱れの苦しさに』と詠み上の句を答えた。
弓に矢をつがえて答えを待っていた義家はその上の句の返答に感じ入り、つがえた矢をはずして追撃を止めて帰った。
これだけの大きな戦いの最中でありながら、たいへん優雅なことであった。（古今著聞集より）＞（現地案内板）
要は、朝廷の支配地の域外の土豪である安倍貞任が、意外にも、まっとうな返歌をしてきたので、許してあげたってところ。
安倍貞任の、歌の詠み手としての力量もさることながら、戦いで追い詰められているにもかかわらず心は平静さを保っていたという、武士の鑑のような振る舞いに、源頼家は畏敬の念を抱いたのだろう。
二人の応答歌を再掲しよう

「衣のたてはほころびにけり」（源頼義）
この歌のキーワードは「たて」。
源義家は安倍貞任に「衣の館（たて）＝砦」は滅んだぞと問いかけたのだが、安倍貞任は「縦糸（たていと）」に掛けて、「年月を経て糸が乱れてきた」と返している。
たしかに縦糸がゆるんだら布はもうダメだろう。
古今著聞集では「さばかりの闘いの中に、やさしかりけることかな」と結んでいる。荒れくれた戦いの中でとても優雅なことだとしている。
安倍貞任は、奥州の土豪である。安倍一族とその子孫はその後に数奇な運命をたどり、平成の世の安倍晋三総理大臣に繋がっていく。
朝廷の敵方だったためか、奥州側のエピソードは極端に少ない。
そんな中、この一首坂の逸話は当時の奥州の文化度の高さを示すものとして、もっと注目を集めてよいと思う。
