★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 『延喜式神名帳』にある「石神社（陸奥国・桃生郡）」に比定される式内社（小社）の論社。
明治41年(1908年)12月に龍口山に鎮座する龍口神社に合祀されたが、現在でも独立した神社として崇拝され、別名奥州の達磨石（女石）ともいわれている。
御祭神は、豊石窓神（とよいわまどのかみ）と櫛石窓神（くしいわまどのかみ）。
この二神は、共に天石戸別神（あめのいわとわけのかみ）の別名で、瓊瓊杵尊（ににぎのみこと）に随伴して日向の国の高千穂に降臨した天孫族に属する神である。
江戸後期の国学者・保田光則の『新撰陸奥風土記(万延元年･1860年)』に「石神の石、桃生郡前谷地竜ノ口ヲ去ル六町計山ノ半腹に在リ、高サ一丈二尺（約3.6メートル）、周リ三丈五尺余（約10メートル）、其ノ形恰モ人ノ座スルガ如シ、土人云フラクハ是式（延喜式）ノ石神社ナルカト云ヘリ」と記されている。
