★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 飯玉神社の起源については古墳時代末期説がありますが、何分時代が古すぎて神話の領域であり、考古学的な証明は難しいそうです。
ひとつ言えることは飯玉神社が立っているあたりは、古墳時代の遺跡が多く発見されていることらしいです。
ここ飯玉神社の鎮座地は、中世の末期に北堀に繰り入れられた久下塚という地域で、
武蔵七党児玉党の久下塚氏の名字の地であり、久下塚の産土として祀られてきた神社であるらしい。
境内には現存していれば樹齢720年位の、目通り周囲12.7mほどの欅の御神木があったことから、相当の古社である事がうかがえるらしい。
更に、創建については時代をさかのぼる手がかりとして、この辺りに公家塚古墳という古墳時代のなごりがあり、やはり古墳がらみで創建は不詳です。
