聖武天皇の頃、按察使兼鎮守府将軍大野東人の従者・徳民駿河が住み、紀州（和歌山県）熊野権現を勧請したのが始まりと伝わる。
明治4年、伊邪那美命を祭神として熊野神社と称す。
旧暦1月14日に行われてきた奇祭・蘇民祭は、新暦1月第3土曜日に改められ、夜を徹して勇壮な裸参りが行われている。
