鹽土老翁神が海水を煮て製塩する方法を人に教えた際、和賀佐彦という神様が七歳の子供の姿になって塩を牛に運ばせたたといわれています。
その塩があまりにも重かったのでしょうか、その牛が石になったといわれています。
石の周囲から潮が湧き出し、結果、石は池の底に沈むことになったようです。
七月七日にお祭りがありお姿を見ることができるそうです。
この石牛に不浄を行う者に祟るといわれ、信じ崇め奉る者の災厄を退け牛馬の病を癒すといわれています。
昔は池の上からでも牛の頭がわかるほどに水に沈む岩が牛の形をしていたそうですが、今は劣化が進みアーモンドの形になっていてなんとか牛の背をしのぶことができるそうです。
古来、神はけっして人間にとってありがたいものではありませんでした。
幸福をもたらすこともあり、災厄をもたらすこともあり、だた、ただ崇め奉るしかありませんでした。その一端をのこしていますね、、
