Not cheap but worth a try. If you’re looking for the self-heating bento it’s the one with a string attached to it. Can get really crowded so plan your schedule ahead to avoid missing your shinkansen ride.

I highly recommend this bento store for people who want to experience bento from different places in Japan. It opens really early. It’s bento is priced within 1000-2000 yen each.

A shop dedicated to selling a huge huge variety of bento. This has the largest selection compared to all the bento shops I've been into in Japan. The only 'bad' about the shop is it'll give you a headache on what to select! :p

Busy spot in Tokyo station to find a huge selection of bento boxes. We were overwhelmed with the choices! The place being in a central location in the station was extremely busy when we went midday, but paying was quick and efficient. They even accept credit cards here. We are the bento boxes on the shinkansen to kyoto, and loved them! So fresh and perfectly portioned.

The best train bento shop which huge selection of bento boxes! In the fridge the tags will show which are the top ranking ones and there are pictures of what they look like so it makes it easier for us to choose. We have pick a tuna+salmon roe bento and a beef+pork self-heating (one that you pull the string and it will heat up in serval minutes) bento. They are not the top ranking ones but they looked so yummy.

This place can get a bit crowded, but for good reason: there probably isn't a better choice for ekiben in all of Japan. Between selection, churn (freshness) and location, this is a really solid choice. I got a salmon (cooked) bento and my wife got a veggie bento. Both were excellent! The only downside as others had noticed was the popularity. We were there at 5:40am and the place was buzzing. I would imagine it's much worse later on.

駅弁屋祭 Ekibenya Matsuri [Festival of Train Station Lunch Boxes]. The establishment is inside the train station turnstiles. It is a bit hard to find (even the second time) but there are helpful train station staff to point the way. (It is a popular destination.) They have a range of ekiben from around Japan. A large display window has the offerings. Fun to visit even if you don't need a bento but it is a fun distraction on a longer train ride. (Hopefully, with nihon-shu.)

Come to the station earlier, find the place and get your bento. There are several branches in Tokyo station. We used the biggest (central) one. It’s really crowded. Watch your time. don’t be late. Enjoy the lunch ??
