Chuzenji - Ueda

The Yakushido, designated as a National Important Cultural Property, was erected in the early Kamakura period and has a spectacular thatched roof with a treasure. The thickness of the Kayano layer is so great that the overall impression is soft and fluffy. In the hall, there is a gentle pharmacist, Nyorai-sama, who is also from the morning of Heian. Ryuoyama Chuzenji Temple Nagano Prefecture's oldest wooden building Chusonji Yakushido Chuzenji Yakushido, the oldest wooden building in Shinshu, is built at the foot of Mt. Tokko, south of Shiodadaira. An old-style hall is quietly built in a quiet atmosphere surrounded by trees. This Yakushido is in the form of "Amitabha of Hosangen". Hosanma means that there are four pillars standing from both north, south, east and west, and there are three spaces. The space between pillars is called a ken. Place a round ball (hoju) with a slightly pointed tip on the top of the roof of Kaya, and a square stand (donkey) under it, and see from above. It looks like a square roof of the same shape. This is called "tented roof". There are three doors on the front (eastern side), one on the remaining three sides, and all the rest are board walls with boards lying down. This type of construction was done around the end of the Heian period, and a typical example is the Konjikido, a famous Chusonji temple in Hiraizumi, Iwate Prefecture. In the middle of the Yakushido, four round pillars are erected, a board wall is made between the two on the west side, and in front of it is a Sumidan where the Buddha is enshrined. The Yakushi Nyorai sitting on the pedestal is enshrined on the Sumidan. In the dim light, the gentle face of the prayer, with the heart of his right hand facing forward, the pot of medicine on his left hand, and his gentle look, gives the prayer a sense of security. The location of the Sumidan where the Buddha is enshrined is the same as the Konjikido in Hiraizumi, which was built in the first year of Tenji (1124). As the times change, the seat of the Buddha is lowered toward the wall behind the temple. The Yakushido is old in terms of style, and is believed to have been built in the early Heian period or early Kamakura. In any case, not only is it the oldest building in Nagano prefecture about 800 years ago, but the oldest temple in central Japan (Chubu and Kanto regions) is with the Buddha (Yakushi Nyorai statue). It is wonderful to remain in this Shiodadaira.

There is also a dry mountain garden, and if you listen carefully, you will feel the nature of the call of warbler, insect, and cicada. . . . The road doesn't matter if it's a car, but there are no convenience stores, no vending machines, and there is no vending machine. Double! (Laughs)

There are many other attractions such as the dry landscape garden and the oldest stone statue of the Gorinto in Ueda City ?. There is also a hydrangea road nearby, so you can enjoy it all the time in June.

The Shionodaira area, including Bessho Onsen, was governed by the Hojo clan during the Kamakura period, and is dotted with famous temples that were opened around that time. Anrakuji's octagonal three-storied pagoda has the "return tower" of Daihoji and a national treasure, and if there is no national treasure or special history, it may seem like a disgrace, but this Yakushido is the most glamorous in central Japan. It is said to be an old wooden structure, and it is truly spectacular as it is designated as a national treasure with a sitting statue of the wooden pharmacist Nyorai on a simple Sumidan. The main hall is separate and the actual temple seems to be there, but it is well-maintained, including the Yakushido, so you can worship comfortably. It is hard to say that access by public transportation is convenient, but there is a shuttle bus that connects Shimonogo Station (closest to Ikushimatarushima Shrine) on the Ueda Dentetsu Bessho Line and Bessho Onsen, and the Bessho Line. If you combine it with a shuttle bus or a taxi, you can efficiently appreciate it together with famous places such as Mugonkan and Maeyamaji.

Ryuoyama Chuzenji Temple It is a temple that I was worried about because I passed through the nearby Zensanji Temple on the day I visited it last fall. Yakushido is not only in Nagano prefecture, but also the oldest wooden building in central Japan, and it was a quaint hall with a thatched roof. The wooden pharmacist Nyorai sitting statue in the hall is also an important cultural property of the country. This is also a magnificent temple of the Shingon sect of Chiyama.
