小田八幡宮の前身は福田山徳城寺という寺院であった。一説によれば檀家を持たない、八戸藩の北の護りの祈祷のための寺であったという。確かなことは「小田毘沙門堂」として知られ、八脚門は「小田仁王門」であった由。本尊の毘沙門天像は義経北行伝説がつきまとう。義経が鞍馬から持参したものであると謂われ背に八幡神を内蔵していたものであった。明治の廃物希釈の際、毘沙門堂は八幡宮として存続、毘沙門天像は奥の院のごとく背面の丘の中腹に設けられた堂に祀られた。八幡宮境内の絵馬棚の奥に赤い欄干の石橋が設けられて参路がわかりやすくなったが、以前は「知る人ぞ知る」程度であった。八幡宮にお参りしたなら、ぜひ毘沙門堂も訪ねていただきたい。

The predecessor of Kodahachimangu was a temple called Fukudayama Tokujoji. According to one theory, it was a temple for praying for the protection of the north of the Hachinohe domain, which did not have a Dan family. What is certain is that it is known as "Oda Bishamon-do", and the eight-legged gate was "Oda Niomon". The statue of Bishamonten, the principal idol, is accompanied by the legend of Yoshitsune Kitayuki. It was said that Yoshitsune brought it from Kurama and had Hachiman God built in his back. When the waste was diluted in the Meiji era, Bishamon-do survived as Hachimangu, and Bishamon-ten statue was enshrined in a temple on the back hillside like Okunoin. A red balustrade stone bridge was set up behind the votive tablet shelf in the precincts of Hachimangu to make it easier to understand the approach, but in the past it was only "known to those in the know." If you visit Hachimangu, be sure to visit Bishamon-do.
