★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 聖徳公園の入り口。「海の記念日発祥の地」の石碑の横に高さが５メートル程の「景仰聖徳」と書かれた 四角張った大きな記念碑が建っています。
ヨーロッパ的な印象で左右の側面にライオンのような頭像が埋め込まれていて、よく見ると 以前はこのライオンの口から水が流れていたような感じがします。
この碑の前に立つ私に、この碑にどんな意味があるのかを知る由もありませんが、
まずは、なんと読めばいいのでしょうか。
調べてみると、景仰(けいぎょう)聖徳(せいとく)と読むそうです。
かつて明治天皇が ここ青森港から函館に向け渡海されたことを記念して建てられ、昭和5年、明治天皇の誕生日にあたる11月3日に「明治天皇御渡海記念碑」として除幕式が行われたそうです。
題字の景仰(けいぎょう)とは、偉大なものを敬い慕うこと。そして、ここでいう聖徳の「聖」とは「(明治)天皇」を意味し、聖徳(せいとく)で、明治天皇のすぐれた徳と理解すれば、
「景仰聖徳(けいぎょうせいとく)」の題字の意味は、「偉大なる明治天皇のすぐれた徳を敬い慕う」ということになりました。このような意味で良いのでしょうか。
又、景仰聖徳の題字の他に 左右の側面のライオンの頭像の上面には、元帥海軍将(東郷平八郎)と陸軍大将(一戸兵衛)の書がそれぞれ寄せられていました。
この碑が建てられた昭和初期の日本は、国を挙げて天皇の権威の強化が進められていて、明治天皇が数十年前の巡幸の際に立ち寄った所や泊まった屋敷なども、全国各地で「聖蹟(天皇行幸の地)」として熱心に取り上げられていた時期だそうです。
ところで、公園の海側に公園の説明ボードが建っていたのですが、公園の英語表記が「Shotoku Park」となっていました。
あれ、聖徳(せいとく)ではなく、聖徳(しょうとく)と読ませるんですか？
しかしながら、この公園が「景仰聖徳」の碑などを中心にした明治天皇ご巡幸に由来した公園であれば、聖徳(せいとく)公園と呼んだほうがいいように思いますが。

Also, in addition to the title letters of Kage Sotoku, the books of the Gen. Naval General (Togo Heihachiro) and the Army General (Ichinohe Bibei) were sent to the top face of the head of the lion on both sides.
In the early Showa era where this monument was built, the emperor's authority has been strengthened by the whole country, and the places where the Emperor Meiji stopped by at the time of a trip several decades ago, the residences where he stayed, etc. It is said that it is the time when it was taken up enthusiastically as "Shoi (the place of Emperor Yukiyuki)" in various places.
By the way, the explanation board of the park was built on the sea side of the park, but the English name of the park was "Shotoku Park".
Well, do you read it as not Seitoku, but Seitoku?
However, if this park is a park derived from the Meiji Emperor Gokokoki that centers on the monuments of "Kyosho Seitoku", I think it should be called Seitoku Park.
