★ ★ ★ ★ ★ この神社の歴史もはるかな昔、物部氏がいた古墳〜飛鳥時代が始まりのようだが、明確な歴史は不明だ。
南北朝時代、室町時代にも兵火に遭っているとの記述もある。
他寺と同じく、この神社も波乱の歴史を送ったようだ。
今は、八尾の町の中で、ひっそりと静かに佇んでいる。

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 延喜式神名帳にある河内国若江郡の栗栖神社に比定される式内社で旧村社。八尾市本町五丁目、六丁目、七丁目、及び東本町三丁目辺りの氏神さま。詳しい創建時期は不明であるが、この地を本貫とする物部支族の栗栖連が祖神を祀ったことに始まり、古墳時代に遡るものと思われている。八尾神社は、牛頭天王社と称されていたものを明治維新後に栗栖神社と改め、さらに1908年に現社名に改めた。
楠木正成八臣の一人・八尾別当顕幸が常光寺を中心とした八尾城を構え、当社も南朝に与したが、のちに八尾城は北朝に奪われ、1337年には押し寄せてきた南朝方の兵火に遭ったほか、室町末期の畠山氏内紛でも戦乱で罹災している。

It is an old village shrine that is compared to the Kurisu Shrine in Wakae-gun, Kawachi Province, which is in the Enki-shiki Shinto shrine. Yao Shrine changed what was called Gozu Tenno Shrine to Kurisu Shrine after the Meiji Restoration, and changed its name to the current company name in 1908.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ キリシタン大名の城だった八尾城跡とされている。（城の正確な位置は未詳とのこと）神社の南側のすぐ近くにある民家にはキリシタン灯篭（模造の新しい綾部灯籠）と思われるものがある。家の敷地の中だが、門の外にあるので、道路から見るのは自由。（迷惑なので、どこの家かは書けない）

There is a private house near the south side of the shrine that seems to be a Christian lantern (a new imitation Ayabe lantern). It's inside the premises of the house, but it's outside the gate, so you can see it from the road. (I can't write where the house is because it's annoying)

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 式内社、旧村社、旧若江郡西郷、木戸両村(現八尾市本町5丁目の北側、本町6、7丁目、東本町辺り)の氏神で有る、祭神は宇麻志摩治命、創建は不詳、本殿の様式は春日造り、別名は牛頭天王社、物部一族「栗栖氏」の氏神様は浄化のパワーを秘めている、物部氏由来の神社、物部一族の一つで有る栗栖連がその祖神を祀つた神社。

御祭神は宇麻志麻治命。
境内の八尾市教育委員会の案内によると、この地を本貫地とする物部氏の一族である栗栖連がその祖神を祀ったものだろうという。
江戸時代は牛頭天王社だったが、明治に入り栗栖神社に社名を変更し、明治41年に八尾神社に変更している。
鳥居の脇には栗栖神社の社号標も残されていた。
八尾神社に社名を変更したのは、当時、萱振町にあった加津良神社を合祀したことによるのだろう。
なお、戦後になって加津良神社は旧地に復興している。
教育委員会の案内によると、八尾は古くは矢尾とか矢生、箭尾とも書かれていて、物部氏の一族である矢作部がいたといわれている。また、尾先が八枚に分かれている鶯の名所だったことから八尾になったとも。
境内には室町時代から戦国時代にあった八尾城址の石碑があるが、実は正確な場所はわかっていないので、ここに石碑があるのは一説による、ということでしょう。

According to the guidance of the Board of Education, Yao was also written as Yao, Yao, and Yao in the old days, and it is said that there was Yahagi, a clan of the Mononobe clan. Also, it became Yao because it was a famous place for warblers whose tail is divided into eight pieces.
There is a stone monument of the Yao castle ruins from the Muromachi period to the Warring States period in the precincts, but in fact the exact location is unknown, so it seems that there is a stone monument here according to one theory.
