本社は、征夷大将軍坂上田村麻呂の勧請せるものと伝えられる。
延暦年間（７８２ー８０６）東夷征討の任を帯び東下りの際、当地に一族の士なる登久麻呂を居住せしめ、菅生・軽石・鴨沢の三村に跨る山頂（月山）に延暦十八年（７９９）月夜見命を祀り、同二十一年（８０２）出羽大神、大同四年（８０９）湯殿神を合祀して東夷の鎮定を祈願し、去民帰伏順和し大いに効を奏す。
爾後一村の鎮守の神として文治年間（１１８５－１１９０）奥州守護、葛西氏の一族この地を領し、月山大権現と崇め奉り、山麓に居所を築いて「葛西舘」と称し、旧跡は今に存す。
元禄七年（１６９４）葛西三郎兵衛、同下代横山弥兵衛社殿を再建、安永年間（１７７２－１７８０）野火のため社殿焼失したので山麓に奉遷、明治四年（１８７１）月山神社と改称し、同三十三年（１９００）無格社に指定、昭和七年（１９３２）九月、本殿・拝殿新築し現在に至る。

As the guardian deity of Ichimura afterwards, during the Bunji era (1185-1190), the Kasai clan, the guardian of Oshu, dominated this land, worshiped with Tsukiyama Daigongen, built a residence at the foot of the mountain, and called it "Kasai Tate". I am now.
In the 7th year of Genroku (1694), Saburobei Kasai and Yabei Yokoyama shrine were rebuilt. In 1900, it was designated as an unqualified shrine, and in September 1932, the main shrine and worship hall were newly built and continue to the present day.
