「やくもさす」」「八雲立つ」とは出雲にかかる枕詞です。往古、ここには出雲大社から勧請分霊した神社――出雲神社――がありました。出雲の神が祀られているので、八雲台と呼ばれたのかもしれません。この高い台を含む差し渡し600メートル四方の一帯は、遅くとも鎌倉時代には大きな寺院と神社が並ぶ聖域だったそうです。 1523年（大永年間）、出雲神社はこの地から700メートルほど南東の飯山街道脇に移設され、その後1786年（天明年間）に延喜式内の「伊豆毛神社」――伊豆毛をくずすと万葉仮名になるという――に社号が変更されました。さて、八雲台史跡の南西端には、６世紀末につくられたと見られる八雲台古墳横穴石室の遺跡があります。現在の残っている墳墓はこれだけですが、往古このあたりには数多くの古墳があったようです。そういう事情で、古代からこの一帯は神聖な場所として人びとの崇敬を集めてきたようです。この地から500メートルほど北には、鎌倉時代に開基された宇山聖林寺という、七堂伽藍を擁する大きな寺院があったそうです。柳原寺横から八雲台にのぼる小径は聖林寺と出雲大社への参道だったそうです。

"Yakumo Sasu" and "Yakumo Standing" are the makurakotoba of Izumo. Once upon a time, there was a shrine that was solicited from Izumo Taisha-Izumo Shrine. It may have been called Yagumodai because the god of Izumo is enshrined. It is said that the area of 600 meters square including this high platform was a sanctuary lined with large temples and shrines at the latest in the Kamakura period. In 1523 (Daiei era), Izumo Shrine was relocated to the side of the Iiyama Highway about 700 meters southeast of this area, and then in 1786 (Tenmei era), the "Izuge Shrine" in the Enki ceremony-when Izuge was destroyed. The company name was changed to "Manyogana". At the southwestern end of the Yagumodai historic site, there is the remains of the Yagumodai Kofun Yokoanaishimuro, which is believed to have been built at the end of the 6th century. This is the only burial mound that remains today, but it seems that there were many burial mounds around here. Under such circumstances, it seems that this area has been revered by people as a sacred place since ancient times. About 500 meters north of this area, there was a large temple with the Shichido garan called Uyama Shorinji, which was opened in the Kamakura period. The small diameter that goes up from the side of Yanagihara Temple to Yagumodai is said to have been the approach to Shorinji Temple and Izumo Taisha Shrine.
