この地は，白河天皇陵の北にあり，西行(1118～90)が鳥羽上皇(1103～56)の北面の武士であった頃の邸宅跡と伝える。
江戸時代には庵室(西行寺)があり，境内には月見池・剃髪堂があった。明治11(1878)年観音寺(伏見区竹田内畑町)に併合。観音寺には西行法師像といわれる坐像が安置される。この石標は西行寺の跡を示すものである。

This place is located to the north of Emperor Shirakawa's mausoleum, and is said to be the site of a mansion when Saigyo (1118-90) was a samurai on the north side of Emperor Toba (1103-56).
In the Edo period, there was an hermitage room (Saikou-ji), and there was a Tsukimi pond and a shaved hall in the precincts. Annexed to Kanonji Temple (Takeda Uchihata-cho, Fushimi-ku) in 1878. A sitting statue called Saigyo Hoshi statue is enshrined in Kanonji. This stone mark shows the remains of Saigyouji Temple.
