高は尊いという意味で礼拝の対象であった。峠北側のピークに三等三角点（183.7m）有り。古来より南側池野辺地区と北側大橋地区を結ぶ交通の要衝であった。元治元年に市原から大橋へ落ち延びる天狗党も此の高峠を通ったらしく池野辺側登山口に天狗党殉難者の塚（天狗塚）がある。大戦後の学制改変により、大橋地区に在った新制大池田中学校に池野辺から通学のために此の峠を越えて徒歩で通学した。子ども達が帰宅時に薪を拾って帰ってきた道である。
