★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 奥州余目記録に「諸郡に神領があって其の地に塩釜神社を建てた。本社のその一つである。」と記されている事から、永正11年（1515年）には神社として存在していました。
南郷村誌には、天正18年（1591年）葛西氏の重臣が主家滅亡後、現在の塩竈市にある鹽竈神社から勧請し、祀ったとされています。
安永年間(1772～1781)の風土記御用書出によれば、二郷の塩釜神社は村の鎮守とされており、二郷地域の中心的な位置にあったと考えられます。
祭神は塩土老翁神（塩竈明神）、武甕槌神（鹿島神）、経津主神（香取神）の三神。
なかでも塩土老翁神は、海幸山幸の物語では山幸彦を小船に乗せ、神武東征の物語では塩土老翁神の言葉で、神武天皇は東征を決意したといいます。
また天孫降臨の際、邇邇芸命が笠狭崎に至った時にも登場し、自分の国を奉った別名｢事勝国勝長狭神｣といわれ、伊邪那岐命の子とされています。
