★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 金閣寺(鹿苑寺)、銀閣寺(慈照寺)に並ぶ相国寺第三の境外塔頭寺院です。
室町幕府に定められた「五山十刹」の十刹にも数えられた寺院です。
開山は仏光国師で、弟子で女性で初めて悟りを得たという無外如大という尼僧が仏光国師の遺髪･爪を祀るために立てた庵が発祥です。
無外如大はあまりに美人で男性が寄ってきて修行にならないと言って、焼きごてで自分の頬を焼いたというエピソードがあり、ここの無外如大像も頬に傷が付けられています。
通常、塔頭寺院には法堂は設けられないのですが、真如寺には法堂があります。額には中国で法堂を意味する「大雄殿」の字があります。
内部は開山の像や位牌などが並ぶ1階の上に中二階がある変わった構造です。中二階には本尊 宝冠釈迦如来、その弟子の摩訶迦葉、同じく弟子の阿難の3像が祀られています。
「依怙贔屓」の語の由来にもなった贔屓の像は開山像の横にあります。重いものを担うのを好むといわれる亀によく似た空想上の動物で、ここでは石碑を担いでいます。
書院の襖絵には珍しいことに、ハイビスカスが描かれています。江戸初期に薩摩藩が琉球の花として江戸に献上したようです。
また、西湖図は中国･杭州の西湖の様子が非常に忠実に模写されています。

足利尊氏の執事として権勢を誇った高師直ゆかりの禅刹でもあり、その点でも太平記好きとしては隠れた名所といえます。山号が西隣の等持院と同じく｢萬年山｣であることも興味深いところですね。
さらに当寺には『奥山半僧坊』という天狗様が鎮守としてお祀りされているとのこと。近代になって相国寺から勧請されて遷されたとのことで、これは鎌倉五山筆頭の建長寺と同様であり、天狗と禅寺という取り合わせも意外性があって面白いと思います。

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Open to the public every year from January to mid-March, and in other season available by appointment, Shinnyoji is an amazing example of a gorgeous historic temple. The grounds are famous for the Iris ponds in the spring and the Momiji trees in the fall. In May every year, there is an open festival market. There are also scheduled meditations, tea ceremonies, and other special events. A fantastic place!

In the spring, the Hansobo festival features a small market, shishimai dancing, a taiko performance, a tea ceremony experience by the temple garden, and also offers a beautiful view of the temple's irises.
