三河の人、 菅江真澄 本名白井英男は天明3年1783年30歳で故郷を出発し北を目指して旅に出た。信州から越後を通って秋田の地に足を踏み入れたのは翌年の暮れのことである。それから45年一度も故郷に帰ることなく奥羽の北辺から蝦夷にまで足を伸ばして数多くの紀行文や地誌を残し 常民の暮らしや生業に絵を添えて克明に記録した作品群は明治の末、日本民俗学を確立した柳田国男によって民族研究の鼻祖と高く評価された。
文政12年1829年 地誌「月の出羽路 仙北郡」の調査の途中、隣町の田沢湖町神代で病になり、この地の神宮鈴木家に移された後、7月19日76歳で没した。
この碑は昭和3年春100年祭を挙行した際「角館史考会」によって建立されたものである。

After that, forty-five years without returning to his hometown, he went from the north side of Ou to Ezo, left behind numerous travelogues and geography, and recorded the works of ordinary people with pictures in the end of the Meiji era. Kunio Yanagita, who established Japanese folklore, highly evaluated him as the ancestor of ethnic studies.
Bunsei 12 1829 During the investigation of the regional geography "Tsuki no Dewaji Senboku-gun", he became ill in the neighboring town of Tazawako-cho, Kamiyo, and died on July 19 at the age of 76 after being transferred to the Jingu Suzuki family in this area. did.
This monument was erected by the "Kakunodate Historical Society" when the 100th Anniversary Festival was held in the spring of 1938.
